Plumbing issues in the home such as clogs in a kitchen sink can disrupt dishwashing and food preparation. In the bathroom, clogs in the sink, shower drain, and toilet also cause undesirable disruptions to bathroom usage. Below are some of the common causes of plumbing issues and simple ways to avoid them.

Food Waste Particles in Kitchen Sink Drains

Although it is tempting to pour greasy food waste or oil down the drain, grease and oil can eventually cool down and solidify. The solidified grease can build up in the sink drain and eventually clog it. Particles from food items like flour or rice become sticky when they combine with water and can also clog the sink drain.

It is good practice to avoid pouring any solid food down your sink disposal. For oily food waste, leaving it out to solidify and disposing of it in the appropriate trash avoids having to deal with a clogged sink. For sinks with disposals, running the disposal each time you wash dishes in the sink helps to get rid of any lingering food particles stuck in the disposal.

Flushing Non-Flushable Materials Down the Toilet

Materials such as paper towels, baby wipes, and other non-flushable wipes can clog the toilet since they do not break down easily in water. Even when they flush successfully, some of these materials eventually expand in contact with water and can later create blockages within sewer pipes.

The best way to avoid toilet clogs is to only flush toilet paper and human waste down the toilet. All other non-flushable material should be disposed of in the appropriate trash, including items that may also be labeled flushable.

Debris in the Bathroom Sink Drain

A bathroom sink frequently encounters hair, dirt from skin, and dead skin cells. Without a drain stopper, it is common for such debris to combine with soap scum and pile up, eventually creating drain clogs. It is helpful to clear the drain stopper in a bathroom sink of any hair or debris as frequently to prevent clogs. In cases where there is a lot of hair from shaving, for example, it helps to place a plastic material in the sink to collect the hair instead of letting it wash down the sink drain.

While you can easily avoid these simple clogs, it is best to call a plumbing service if you're unsure of how to fix a plumbing issue.
